  6. Margaret,
These are beautiful! Jung said the spiral was an archetype representing cosmic force. In Ancient England, it was associated with the feminine as the "doorway to life". Here I think that you are partly talking about the evolutionary process of learning and growing. As in a spiral, we seem to pass the same point over and over again but from a different perspective each time. This journey you speak of is a coming into being, Yes?
    xoxo,
    Noelle

  9. Of course, that's exactly what a spiral is, an epicentre.

Thank you for showing me this truth.

  10. Spirals are one of my favorites - today I found this great quote - What is art but life upon the larger scale, the higher. When, graduating up in a spiral line of still expanding and ascending gyres, it pushes toward the intense significance of all things, hungry for the infinite?”
    Elizabeth Barrett Browning quotes

    Love your blog!

  11. Leading outward, returning to...going round but moving on...returning to learn and relearn, but differently each time. I love spirals--and mandalas! I feel much joy here.

  13. That's awesome - a spiral mandala for your spiritual journey! Spirals must hold a powerful secret, many powerful secrets; so prevalent in nature, space, art, so close to both our intellectual and spiritual yearnings.

  17. Hi Rebecca! I think that you're right: a spiral can be a labyrinth. And I love your vision of the labyrinth as a heart, ebbing and flowing... Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  18. Thanks, Gemma! Love your word "emerging." When I look at that butterfly emerging from my positive-self spiral, I feel a moment of grace. So many lessons to learn from nature... Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  19. Hi Noelle~ I am always amazed at the breadth and scope of your knowledge and personal wisdom. I remember in college I used to tell people--when asked--that my favorite book was Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections. One of his theses was that we all have a collective unconscious imbedded in our minds comprised of archetypes. One of these is the spiral. It cropped up again in Man and His Symbols. I find I have more faith in the spiral than the circle which also repeats itself (Native American view of life). The spiral progresses each time you venture out. You're always able to go back to your center for safety. When you mention the British or Celtic feminine, I think of the triple-spiral: girl, woman, crone; or the Christian imagery of the Trinity. What resonates with me is two-fold: 1) the idea of discovery leading to growth, and 2) the Kundalini yoga metaphor of a coiled (spiraled) serpent at the base of one's spine unspiraling up through the chakras to reach a spiritual enlightenment at the crown chakra. 20. Thanks, Rosie! Yes, like the ebb and flow of the tide, and each time the tide flows back something new is discovered that leads us to change... Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  21. Thanks, Meri! Yes! I use the spirial as an affirmation for going forward and breaking out--W do have the possibility of recurring changes. Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  22. Hi Friko! The epicenter is the center of the spiral; thus, in our own spiral, it is the center where we can return to maintain our balance and equanimity. We can then retrace our steps around and gradually enlarge the spiral with new insight and confidence. I like this analogy, too. Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  23. Hi Tami! Wow! I love that Elizabeth Barrett Browning quote! Vortices ascending towards the infinite... I remember feeling that way in Sedona. I have a quote from Hatha Yoga--I like it though it's not as lyrical as yours: "The twist can be thought of as a spiral, the movement of which can go either upward or downward. The downward spiral will enmesh you in your lower nature, while the upward spiral will increase awareness and expand you beyond limitations. For the seeker who has an intense inner desire to pursue spiritual goals, the mind has to be bent and twisted in that direction... A flexible mind and an inflexible spine can rarely be found together. If the body is tied in a knot, so are the mind and emotions." Sometimes I forget the element "body" in mind-body-spirit. Yoga asanas are all about balance! Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  24. Hi Lynne! That is the perfect description of the spiral as metaphor! Whenever we feel stuck, we can retrace our steps and come out again with a new perspective. Spiral, mandala, and collage art all give us the opportunity to achieve that Eureka!, opening the door to the right side of the brain. Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ

  26. Hi Stickup! That is awesome what you said about the spiral's powerful secrets because spirals are pervasive throughout the universe and beyond. One concept is that there is an underlying mathematical principle to our (and everything's) existence which is known as Golden Geometry or even Sacred Geometry. Within that is the Golden Spiral. Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ
