Magpie Tales 65

The dashing, wealthy Francis Bernandone was ceasing to exist; he was becoming a different person, one who was humble and caring. He was growing aware of the natural world and often went on walks through the Italian countryside.

During one of these walks, two birds flew down to him, and an immediate connection sprang up. Francis received a very clear message from the birds.

The communication touched his heart, not his ears. It was moving and profound. He had a new perception of himself and the world around him. Francis's purpose was henceforth to teach others the interconnectedness of all God's creatures through living example.

As he set out to start this new life, Francis noticed that wherever he went animals followed him and helped him to communicate the lessons he was teaching.

  1. A wonderful story of transformation, simply yet profoundly laid out. I am particularly struck by the phrase"ceasing to exist"; how it speaks of not a death but rather of a becoming.

  9. Hi Bee! His humility is expressed beautifully in the Prayer of Saint Francis; it's been put to music which is so meaningful at Mass. I also love the Blessing of the Animals on his Saint's Day.
